Limited to 63 numbered copies for private distribution. Copy #40. Inscribed by Joseph Ishill on verso of page with frontispiece. "To Herbert Faulkner West from Rose & Joseph Ishill Dec. 1958." Sewn printed stiff wraps. 8pp. Handset with Elegante type and printed on Renker Text paper. Frontispiece from a Japanese painting by Hosoda Eishi printed in England. Glassine dustwrapper. Laid-in is a holograph note by Ishill dated "Dec. 20, 1958" on the Press' 3.5 x 5.5 inch stiff paper letterhead. Ishill thanks West for sending "For a Hudson Biographer" and promises to send publications of his by Henry S. Salt and Cunningham Graham. Ishill has also hand-corrected the printed telephone number of the Press. Aprx ninety words. Note lightly toned, mostly along one edge; otherwise, in Fine condition. Also laid-in is a typed note dated "19 September 1958" from Lewis M. Stark of The New York Public Library to Joseph Ishill thaking him for sending a proof of The Decalogue. "It's a charming bit of typography." Stark mentions being "pleased to see Sanka Know's article on you and your press in the New York Times recently" and informs Ishill that publications of the Oriole Press will be included among other private press books in an upcoming exhibition. Aprx fifty-five words with Stark's stamped signature and "copy" in red pencil in upper corner. (The letter is neither a carbon copy nor a photostat.) 5.5 x 8.5 NYPL letterhead. Folded two times, otherwise, in Fine condition. Book with a touch of shelfwear, mostly at the spine fold; the dustwrapper is toned and has two quarter-inch chips and one half-inch chip. Near Fine condition in a Very Good dustwrapper. Herbert Faulkner West, Professor of Comparative Lit at Dartmouth College, was the author of "Modern Book Collecting for the Impecunious Amateur" (Little Brown, 1936) and wrote about Robert Frost and Kenneth Roberts (of whom he was a friend and advocate, though publically regretted Roberts' advocacy of water divining).
